Quang Tri: Wildlife trafficker arrested, five pangolins rescued

Police in the central province of Quang Tri’s Huong Hoa district on October 7 arrested a man illegally transporting five Java pangolins, which are in the list of endangered rare species and banned from trading.

Quang Tri (VNA) – Police inthe central province of Quang Tri’s Huong Hoa district on October 7 arrested aman illegally transporting five Java pangolins, which are in the list of endangered rare speciesand banned from trading.

Tran Quang, 61, residing in Huong Hoa district, was detected carrying a womanwith many suspicious signs. When asked to stop for checking, Quang drove his motorbiketo flee. After being chased nearly 2 km, the woman jumped off the motorbike andfled into a coffee field.

Quang wasfound to transport the five Java pangolins with total weight of 32.7 kg.

Quang admitted that he was rented to transport the pangolins, which areestimated to value about 250 million VND (10,780 USD), from Tan Lien commune toKhe Sanh town.

The local police are searching for the fleeing woman for furtherinvestigation.

On October 8, staff from theVietnam Wildlife Protection Centre under the Cuc Phuong National Park came toHuong Hoa district to rescue these pangolins./.
