Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s hope for more medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro city Brazil is fading as its athletes performed poorly on August 8, the third day into the games.

Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, who much was expected of before the Games, once again failed to advance when she finished in 33rd place with a time of 2:16.20 in the 200m individual medley.

She previously did not qualify in the women’s 400m individual medley and 400m freestyle events.

Fencer Nguyen Thi Le Dung lost to Kim Jiyeon of the Republic of Korea in the women’s sabre event in the round of 32.

In rowing, Ho Thi Ly and Ta Thanh Huyen finished in 19th place among 20 participating teams. They have little hope in the play-off round scheduled for later in the day.

After three days, the United States leads the overall medal table with five gold medals, seven silvers and seven bronzes, followed by China with five gold medals, three silvers and five bronzes.

💫 Vietnam is 15th with the historic gold medal won by marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh in the men’s 10m air pistol on the first day of the Games, the country’s only medal.-VNA
