RoK wants India to join RCEP

Jakarta (VNA) – Ambassadorof the Republic of Korea to Indonesia Kim Chang-beom on January 14 affirmedthat RoK wants India to be a member of the Regional Comprehensive EconomicPartnership (RCEP).

He said Seoul will continuewith specific moves to deliver on its commitments to RCEP negotiations.

Last week, Director General for Trade Policy Yeo Han-koo ofthe Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy met ASEAN SecretaryGeneral Lim Jock Hoi and head of Indonesia’s RCEP negotiation delegation ImanPambagyo to discuss steps to achieve the deal’s goals this year.

According to the Korean side,the RCEP is significant to export-oriented economies.

Korean news agency Yonhap reportedthat the RoK’s exports reached 542.4 billion USD last year, down 10.3 percent fromthe previous year. Southeast Asian countries accounted for over 20 percent ofthe RoK’s exports, up 19.1 percent year-on-year.

RCEP groups 10 ASEAN memberstates and six partner countries, including Japan, the RoK, China, India,Australia and New Zealand.

However at the East AsiaSummit in Bangkok, Thailand in November 2019, only 15 countries agreed to signthe deal, except India./.
