Rule of law crucial to peace, development: Ambassador

New York (VNA) –
The rule of law at national and universal levels holdsa significant role in ensuring peace, promoting sustainable development, andprotecting human rights, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the PermanentDelegation of Vietnam to the UN, has said.

He made the affirmation while attending a meeting of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee (Legal Committee) onOctober 8-9.

Laying stress on Vietnam’s achievements in building and completing the legalsystem and judicial reforms as well as enhancing jurisdiction to protect humanrights, Ambassador Quy said the country has proactively participated in thecodification and advanced development of the international law.

Vietnamis one of the first 10 countries to sign and ratify the Non-Proliferation Treaty,he said.

Ambassador Quy stated that along with other ASEAN member states, Vietnam is makingconcerted efforts to turn Southeast Asia into a region of peace, stability andprosperity.
 
In the context of the complicated developments in the East Sea, Vietnam callson relevant parties to exercise restraint and address disputes by peacefulmeans on the basis of international regulations, including the 1982 UnitedNations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS), with respect for legaland diplomatic processes, fully implementing the Declaration on the Conduct ofParties in the East Sea, and working to finalise an effective and legallybinding Code of Conduct in the waters, he added.

The Sixth Committee’s meeting drew the participation of more than 70 UN membercountries, and representatives of international organisations. They all agreedthat respect of the rule of law at national and universal jurisdiction levelsis essential to tackle current security challenges and conflicts.

Members of the Non-Aligned Movement said that the rule of the law must bepromoted based on the UN Charter and international law, particularly respectfor independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.-VNA
