Hanoi (VNA) – SingaporeanMinister of Education Ong Ye Kung called on academia to suggest measures tocope with challenges to economic development during a symposium held by the Nanyang Technological University on August 5.

Ong said trade disputebetween the US and China, UK exit from the European Union, rapid technologicalchanges and fake news are posing challenges to Singapore when it comes toissuing social management and economic development policies.

It is anopportune time for closer partnerships between academics and the government totackle the biggest economic issues, especially in job creation, economiccompetitiveness improvement, response to climate change and population aging,he said.

Talking toresidents at Tanjong Pagar community area, Singaporean Minister for Trade and Industry ChanChun Sing championed a "targeted and long-term perspective" inSingapore's strategies, even as it tackles short-term challenges posed by theexternal environment. 

The latest statistics by theSingapore Ministry for Trade and Industry showed that the economy of the islandstate grew by only 0.1 percent in the second half, the lowest in the pastdecade.-VNA
