Singapore, China vow to strengthen defence cooperation

Singapore (VNA) – Singaporean Defence MinisterNg Eng Hen and his Chinese counterpart Wei Fenghe have reaffirmed thelongstanding, warm and friendly bilateral defence relationship between the twocountries, according to a statement of the Singaporean Defence Ministry.

The statement said during a video conference on June 8, the ministerstalked about regional security developments and how their militaries hadsupported the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

They reiterated their commitment to strengthen defencecooperation under an enhanced pact signed in 2019, and consented to regularly organisevideo conferences, and institutionalise and scale up flagship bilateral armyand navy exercises, and regular academic exchanges.

They discussed practical ways to strengthen ASEAN-Chinadefence cooperation and the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting (ADMM)-Plusframework.

Posting on Facebook after the meeting, the SingaporeanDefence Minister said he had extensive and comprehensive discussions with GenWei. They were both keen that military-to-military ties bekept warm despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and supported planned exercisesbetween the two armies continuing this year./.
