Singapore to build fifth terminal at Changi Airport

Singapore has decided to build another passenger terminal at Changi Airport, announced Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew this week.

Singapore’s fifth airport terminal will beready in the next decade and details on the facility are expected at theend of this year, he added.

He urged ChangiAirport to capture Singapore’s share of the growing pie and tocement its position as a leading aviation hub.

Observers believe that the new terminal will most likely be theairport’s biggest one that will be capable of handling between 30 and 50million passengers a year.

Master-planning for Terminal 4 beganin 2008, two months after Terminal 3 opened. Construction of theterminal, with a planned capacity of 16 million passenger movements ayear, will begin this year and is slated to be completed in 2017.

Last year, Changi Airport handled more than50 million passengers for the first time in its 31-year history. In thefirst quarter of 2013, it served 13.05 million passenger movements, anincrease of 6.2 per cent over the same period last year.-VNA
