Six women traffickers sentenced to prison

Six members of a women trafficking ring were sentenced to 3-10 years in prison at a trial on March 6.
The People’s Court of southern Tay Ninh province sentenced six membersof a women trafficking ring to 3-10 years in prison at a trial on March6.

Pham Thi Hong Duc, 61, got a 12-year sentencewhile Nguyen Thi Tam, 41, and Nguyen Thi Dung, 48, were sentenced to 10and six years in prison, respectively. Tran Thi Thanh Hue, 30, willserve seven years in prison and Pham Thi Mo, 32, five years. Tran ThiThuy, 45, will spend three years behind the bar.

The court also ordered the defendants to pay 36 million VND in compensation to their victims.

According to the court’s verdict, in early 2012, Dung and Mo met Hueand a Chinese national named Xuan in Ho Chi Minh City, who askedDung to lure Vietnamese women for them to sell into illegal marriageabroad. They promised to pay Dung 45 million VND for each woman soldsuccessfully.

In turn, Dung recruited Tam to workfor her. At the same time, Tam also collaborated with Duc to sell manyVietnamese women abroad. Duc confessed to have sold four Vietnamesegirls to Malaysia .

From early 2011 to August2012, the defendants sold 17 Vietnamese women to China and Malaysia. Dung is also involved in a human trafficking case in northern BacGiang province which is under investigation by Bac Giang provincialpolice.-VNA
