Southern region faces power shortage

The southern region is facing the threat of a power shortage during the dry season.
The southern region is facing the threat of a power shortage during thedry season as construction of power plants is behind schedule.

Thedemand by the region between March and June will increase by 15 percentagainst recent figures, according to the Vietnam Electricity (EVN).

The south has to rely on supply from the central and northern regions.

Thepower transmission lines in provinces like Binh Duong, Ba Ria – VungTau, Dong Nai and Long An are overloaded, according to a report in theNguoi Lao Dong (the Labourer) newspaper.

Meanwhile, constructionhas been slow on many 220 kV power lines and transmission stations suchas Nhon Trach, Phu My 2, Vung Tau, My Xuan, Tay Ninh, Ham Tan and DucHoa.

In recent years, the demand for electricity for the aquaculture and fruit cultivation sectors has increased significantly.

Theconsumption of power in the delta's coastal provinces of Ben Tre, TraVinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau in 2012, for example, rose by 50percent against 2011. In 2013, it increased by 49.6 percent against2012.

The investment in new power projects cannot keep up with demand, according to the EVN.

Toensure supply, the group has told the Southern Power Corporation towork with provinces to find capital to invest in power line projectsthat serve businesses' production.

Companies and local residents have also been asked to use power efficiently.

Lastmonth, the corporation put into operation Turbine 1 of Vinh Tan 2Thermopower Plant and Turbine 2 of Hai Phong 2 Thermopower Plant.

It also put into use 48 projects with 500kV, 220kV and 110kV transmission lines that have a total length of 705 km.

TheEVN has also asked the National Power Transmission Corporation toensure the operation of a high-voltage transmission line system andcomplete construction on key power projects by the end of this month.

The EVN also said that it had been operating gas-fuelled turbines at full capacity.
