Tropical storm Haima that wrecked havoc in the northern and centralregions of the country on June 24 has claimed at least 10 lives.
TheNational Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the stormbecame a tropical depression on the afternoon of June 24 before comingto Nam Dinh and Thanh Hoa province. It caused torrential rains andflooding in many urban areas in the northern region.
According toinitial report of the central province of Thanh Hoa, four people werekilled by lightning in thundershower and whirlwind on June 23 and 24.
Thestorm submerged and unroofed 70 houses, damaged 1,700m of dykes andswept away 165 ha of aquaculture. Total losses are estimated at around260 billion VND.
In the meantime, the northern province of Nam Dinh reported that four people were killed by lightning by 9 p.m on June 24.
TheNghe An Flood and Strom Prevention and Control Steering Committee saidthat the storm killed one person and left two others missing in theprovince.
Storm Haima pulled down, submerged, unroofed 1,280houses in the central province of Nghe An as well as damaged 4,167 ha ofrice and 1,177 ha of industrial crops, and 1,790 ha of maize and sixreservoirs and three suspended bridges in the locality. Total losses areestimated at more than 210 billion VND./.
