Sunken fishing boat set to be salvaged

Authorities in the central city of Da Nang and the Bac My An shipbuilding co-operative have completed detailed plans to salvage the fishing boat DNa 90152 which was rammed and sunk by a Chinese ship while undertaking its regular operations in its traditional Hoang Sa fishing grounds.

The boat DNa 90152 was towed by the Vietnam FisheriesSurveillance Force ship into Da Nang port, about 2 nautical miles fromthe mainland.

Under the plan, a crane barge will be used tolift the ship out of the water, said Nguyen Van Si, head of theco-operative. Authorities will verify all losses from the ship once itis safely retrieved.

On May 26, the Chinese ship 11209 rammedthe DNa 90152, from Da Nang city, near a Chinese oil rig illegallystanding in Vietnam’s waters. The Vietnamese trawler had been on aregular fishing voyage when it was deliberately encircled by Chinesefishing vessels of China and attacked by China’s ship 11209.

All the 10 fishermen on board were rescued by other Vietnamese trawlers.

The incident occurred at 4pm at a site 17 nautical miles from whereChina’s Haiyang Shiyou-981 oil rig was illegally standing. The locationis the traditional fishing grounds of Vietnamese fishermen in Vietnam’sexclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

In early May,China illegally dispatched the rig, as well as a large fleet of armedvessels, military ships and aircraft, to Vietnam’s waters and positionedit at 15 degrees 29 minutes 58 seconds north latitude and 111 degrees12 minutes 6 seconds east longitude. The location is 80 miles deepinside Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone.

On May 27, China moved the rig to 15 degrees 33 minutes 22 secondsnorth latitude and 111 degrees 34 minutes 36 seconds east longitude. Thenew location is 25 nautical miles from Tri Ton Island in Vietnam’sHoang Sa archipelago and 23 nautical miles east-northeast from the oldlocation, still completely within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone andcontinental shelf.

China’s armed vessels have aggressivelyfired high-power water cannons at and intentionally rammed againstVietnamese law enforcement and civil ships, causing damage to many boatsand injuring many people on board.-VNA
