Support for women in climate change adaptation discussed

Tra Vinh (VNA) – The ActionAid Vietnam (AAV) and thePeople’s Committee of southern Tra Vinh province held a local conference onMarch 22 to discuss the project “Women respond to natural disasters and climatechange”.

The project is underway in Wards 8 and 9 in Long Duccommune, Tra Vinh city, from January 2019 – June 2020, costing a total of 4.9billion VND (213,000 USD) funded by the Sweden’s Forum Syd and ActionAidSweden.

It aims to help women in areas affected by natural disastersand climate change and raise their awareness of climate change adaptation anddisaster risk management, towards building resilient communities and improvingtheir access to public services on water drainage via policy dialogue.

Its activities include promoting water purification usingsolar power, multiplying effective models via policy impact, among others.

Vice Chairwoman of the municipal People’s Committee Tang ThiDep said Tra Vinh province and Tra Vinh city in particular is one of the MekongDelta localities hardest hit by climate change, particularly drought, risingsea level and salinisation.

As a member of the ActionAid International, the AAV hascarried out development programmes in Vietnam’s poorest and most remote areassince 1989. Its activities aim to raise public voice to ensure the rights of thepoor and the disadvantaged, improve the role of the government and otherrelevant parties in programmes directly affecting local lives.

Founded in1995, Forum Syd is a politically and religiously unaffiliated developmentcooperation organisation with around 140 member organisations from Swedishcivil society.
