Ten countries pledge to help Indonesia resolve immigrant problems

Thecountries include Qatar, Gambia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, theUnited Arab Emirates, Turkey, the US, the Philippines, Cambodiaand Australia, said the ministry.

In a pressconference in Jakarta on June 4, Ministry Spokesperson ArrmanathaNasir said Qatar pledged 50 million USD in aid and Gambiaexpressed its willingness to accept immigrants to help alleviate theburden.

In an earlier press conference held in Bangkokon May 29, several countries including Australia, the US, thePhilippines and Cambodia also stated their intention to givefinancial support to Indonesia.

According toAndy Rachmianto, Director of Indonesia’s International Security andDisarmament, the immigrants, mainly the Rohingya group from Myanmar,will be temporary housed in three accommodations in the East and NorthAceh province.

The number of immigrants may reach 12,000as thousands of others are facing miserable conditions on their seavoyage, he added.-VNA
