Thai Cabinet approves disaster prevention master plan

The Thai cabinet has endorsed a drought prevention master plan expected to be used as a guideline in dealing with water shortage problems.

The master plan will also set a framework for the development of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation 2015.

Undera five-year plan, the master plan will address the worsening droughtcrisis in the country, as the total amount of rain recorded last yearwas much lower than that of the year before.

The combined amountof water contained in all dams and reservoirs was reportedly much lessin 2014 than it was in 2013 by 5.3 billion cubic meters. The hugedecline could affect the livelihood of Thai people significantly.

The master plan has been developed to promote the sustainability of water consumption.

Itis aimed at preventing and mitigating drought impacts, preparing tohandle the emergency situation, implementing relief measures andfollowing up on the situation after the mission has been completed.-VNA
