Chairman of the military-appointed Constitutional Drafting Committee(CDC) Jate Thonavanik said on March 5 that the CDC had proposed atwo-year ban from politics for military government members to preventthem retaining power.

The ban would take effect formembers of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) once the newconstitution is adopted, he said.

Former Army Chiefand now Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-O-Cha spoke out against theproposal, saying that in the interim constitution, which came intoeffect after the coup d’état, CDC members are to be excluded frompolitics.

Some members of the National LegislativeAssembly and National Reform Council (NRC) also opposed the idea, stressing the need to provide substantial reasoning for the ban.
