Hanoi (VNA) –The Thai Library Association (TLA) has joined hands with the Stock Exchange ofThailand (SET) to launch a project by adopting green initiatives to reduce carbonemissions, according to local authorities.

According to a pressstatement released on February 18, over 600 libraries throughout Thailand willparticipate in the project to promote digital libraries and e-books, encourage environmentally-friendlyhabits such as using bicycles, reducing the use of paper and plastic, andrecycling waste.

SET Senior Executive VicePresident Krisada Sektrakul was quoted in the statement as saying that librariescan play a vital role in educating and communicating on the impacts of climatechange to the public.

The joint project between the TLA and SET has extended from the “Care the Bear”project initiated last year, to encourage Thailand’s listed firms to reduce theirgreenhouse gas emissions.

During the last six monthsof 2018, SET and 33 capital-market organisations held several eco-friendly events, which have helped successfully reduce the emission of nearly 1,500 tonnes ofcarbon dioxide, equivalent to the amount obtained from growing approximately163,509 trees.

Meanwhile, TLA VicePresident Satramedhi Suwakhon Siriwongworawat said that the project will helpraise public awareness of the need to mitigate climate change, especially amongthe youth.

The project is expectedto build knowledge of climate change for some 600,000 library visitors a year.

Previously, TLA and SET havealso collaborated in organising a workshop to help librarians and related staffacquire more knowledge related to climate change, thus encouraging them to takeconcrete actions for their communities.–VNA
