Bangkok (NNT/VNA)– Representatives of the private sectors of Thailand and the United Kingdomhave participated in the 3rd Thai-UK Business Leadership Council Meeting,during which a focus was placed on their cooperation in trade and investment.
Following its establishment in 2016, the Thai-UK BusinessLeadership Council convened its third meeting, attended by Thai entrepreneursled by Minister of Commerce Sontirat Sontijirawong and their Britishcounterparts led by British Ambassador to Thailand Brian Davidson.
The Bangkok meeting was called to review progress undervarious cooperation frameworks agreed upon during the previous gathering, withparticular concentration on the drafting of a free trade agreement (FTA)between the Thai and British governments.
Initially, the two sides were resolved to set up a joint working group withinthe year to expedite the FTA formulation process while the UK prepares towithdraw from the European Union. Future negotiations will be arranged wheneverboth countries are ready.
Minister Sontirat disclosed that the Thai government hasagreed with a proposal by the business leaders from the UK for Thailand toensure greater convenience for foreign investors, especially those doingbusiness in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).
He said laws pertaining to foreign businesses in Thailand will be amended inline with international standards in the hope of drawing more investors to theKingdom.-VNA
