Thailand announces same-time infections of two COVID-19 variants

The Ministry of Health of Thailand has said that some workers at a Bangkok constructions site have tested positive for both the Alpha and Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19.
Bangkok (VNA) – The Ministry of Health of Thailand has said that some workers at a Bangkok constructions site havetested positive for both the Alpha and Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19. 

Thailand’s Medical Sciences Department director-general Dr. Supakit Sirilakannounced the findings on July 12, adding that the cases are not severe. As of now, the patients remain fit and have not developed worrisome symptoms, said Dr Supakit.

However, heexpressed his concern that more cases of mixedinfection could lead to a hybrid and eventually, a new variant, which issomething health officials around the world have been worried about.

Discussing COVID-19variants in Thailand, Dr Supakit said the highly contagious Delta was close tobecoming the dominant strain in the country, replacing Alpha. 

Thailand recorded 8,685 infections on July 13, bringing the national tally to353,712, and 56 fatalities, raising the number of deaths to 2,847./.
