Thailand confirms no trade with DPRK

Hanoi​ (VNA) – Thai PrimeMinister Prayut Chan-ocha confirmed there is no trade between Thailand and theDemocratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on December 12.

He made the statement ahead of thevisit by US Special Representative for North Korea Policy Joseph Yun toThailand seeking to intensify pressure on the DPRK over its weapon programmes.

Thailand guarantees to have abided bythe United Nations resolutions, he told reporters at the Government House,rejecting reports about boats from the DPRK in Thai waters.

During a visit to Bangkok in August,US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pressed Thailand, the US’s long-standingally in Asia, to act more on the DPRK. The US believed the DPRK has activecompanies in Thailand, urging its ally to close them.

The Thai Foreign Ministry said tradewith the DPRK has declined by 94 percent from the previous year.

Envoy Joseph Yun is scheduled tovisit Bangkok this week to discuss with the local governments about how to stepup pressure on the DPRK as tension increases over its development of nuclearweapons and missiles in defiance of UN resolutions and sanctions.-VNA
