Thailand estimates 18.5 bln THB spent during Songkran festival

Bangkok (VNA) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on April 19 estimated that Songkran celebrations have seen about 18.5 billion THB (537million USD) in spending by revellers across the country.
 
𒐪 Around 300,000 international tourists were expected tovisit Thailand during the long holiday period, accounting for roughly 60% ofall visitors to the country during the same period in 2019.

TAT estimates that overall tourism revenue will bearound 2.38 trillion THB for 2023. That figure includes 1.5 trillion THB fromup to 30 million international arrivals, while Thai tourists are expected togenerate roughly 800 million THB. The Economic and Business Forecast Centre of the ThaiChamber of Commerce University has meanwhile released a report on pre-pandemicconsumer spending behavior during the 2019 Songkran celebrations. For that year, overall spending was estimated atapproximately 135 billion baht, owing to the economic uncertainty. Consumerspending for this year’s Songkran celebrations was estimated to come close tothat figure, at 125 billion THB./.
