Thailand, Malaysia coordinate on earthquake relief in Myanmar

Thailand and Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair, announced an agreement to coordinate with Myanmar on the delivery of international aid, with the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) serving as the central coordinator.

Bangkok (VNA)𒆙 – Thailand is closely coordinating with Malaysia to deliver humanitarian assistance to Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that struck the country on March 28.

Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said that he and his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, have jointly led a humanitarian mission to Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, to assess urgent needs in areas affected by the disaster. Minister Maris emphasised that immediate priorities include enhanced medical support, temporary shelters, water purifiers, sanitation items and and essential medical supplies to prevent disease outbreaks.
On the occasion, Thailand and Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair, announced an agreement to coordinate with Myanmar on the delivery of international aid, with the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) serving as the central coordinator.
In the initial phase, Thailand will focus on the affected areas in Mandalay, while Malaysia will concentrate on areas in Sagaing. The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar’s Sagaing Region at around 1 pm (local time), followed by a tremor measuring 6.4 in magnitude./.
