Thailand partially lifts ban on political activities

Bangkok (VNA) - The National Council for Peace and Order has agreedto partially lift the ban on political activities, with an officialannouncement to be issued shortly, NCPO deputy chief Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn.
He made the statement after an NCPO meeting chaired by Prime Minister and NCPOchief Prayut Chan-o-cha on August 28.
Tanasak said the NCPO has eased the political restrictions so that politicalparties can resume certain activities from next month to December, to preparefor the general election tentatively scheduled for February 24 next year.
Details will be given in anannouncement to be issued by the NCPO chief shortly, Tanasak added.
Earlier, DeputyPrime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said that political activities to be permittedafter the easing of the political ban would include holding party meetings toselect party executives and recruiting members; giving their opinions on thedemarcation of constituencies; conducting primary votes to choose electioncandidates, and setting up committees to select the candidates; and contactingparty members.-VNA
A general election in Thailand scheduled to take place in November will be delayed possibly until early 2019 after the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) on January 25 passed an organic law on parliamentary elections with a delay of enforcement.
