Thailand pledges efforts to prevent call centre scams, cross-border crimes

As the Thai Government stays committed to combating these offences, strong moves have been taken to fight call centre scams and transnational crimes.

Bangkok (VNA) - Thailand is stepping up strong measures to prevent call centre scams and transnational crimes, demonstrating its government's commitment to combating these offences, according to Thai Deputy Prime Minsiter and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

After presiding over a meeting of the steering committee on preventing security threats in border areas on March 21, Phumtham confirmed that measures to cut electricity, internet and fuel in areas sharing border with Myanmar will remain in place to ensure effective action against criminals.

Although the crackdown has produced significant results, scamming activities persist in some areas, with call centre gangs relocating their bases from Myanmar to other countries in the region, he said.

He reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to tackling call centre gangs in alignment with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s policy.

In addition to call center scams, smuggling of contraband across border routes remains a pressing issue.

♏ Phumtham confirmed that relevant agencies are discussing ways to prevent smuggling of restricted items to call centre gangs via multiple crossing points./.
