Bangkok (VNA) – The development of hydropowerprojects on the mainstream Mekong River will cause great impact on watersecurity, especially in countries in the lower basin.

The ideas were agreed by almost all participants at aninternational seminar boosting sustainable use of water resources of the MekongRiver, which was held by the Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University in Thailand’sSakon Nakhon province on October 31.

Delegates, who are experts, scholars and managers fromThailand and Vietnam, delivered speeches and shared the outcomes of theirstudies related to the use of Mekong River’s water, including impact of climatechange on the Mekong Delta, basic principles in utilising Mekong River’s water,and consequences of oriented development on Mekong River, and hydropower damson the river and alternative energy.

They stressed the need to intensify cooperation mechanism inthe Mekong River Commission (MRC) and coordination between nations in theMekong River basin in responding to climate change.

This was the first time the Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat Universityhad hosted a large-scale conference on the Mekong River.

The event looked to create a new and multi-dimensional view onenvironmental security challenges caused by climate change and developmentprojects in the upper reaches.

It also aimed at improving awareness of negative impact ofclimate change and the unsustainable use of Mekong River water, boostingcommunications on the environmental issue in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, andenhancing knowledge about water-related challenges facing the region in thetime to come.-VNA
