Hanoi (VNA) – Thailand’spolice said on March 19 that they have uncovered a plot to assassinate thecountry’s leader after seizing a weapon cache belonging to red shirt leaderWuthipong Kochathamakun, who has been on the run since the military coup. National Police Chief General JakthipChaijinda told media that the police found a rifle with a scope, speakingclearly that the weapon were going to be used to assassinate the country’s leader,giving a hint to Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. Previously, on March 18, the policediscovered dozens of rifles and grenades, and thousands of bullets at a housebelonging to Wuthipong Kochathamakun. They also arrested nine men in connectionwith the arms seizure. The police said they had clear evidence that thesuspects and their network were aiming to cause unrest. Police chief Jakthip presented no otherevidence of an assassination plot, but said Wuthipong and his network havealways opposed the government and the group has warned on social media that theprime minister will be murdered. According to the country’s police, thegroup is planning an ambush if officials still continue their operation toblock Dhammakya temple in Pathum Thani province. The police ended their search of thetemple in earlier March after laying siege to it for more than three weekswithout finding the Dahmmakya sect’s abbot, Phra Dhammajayo, who is wanted forsuspected money-laundering. - VNA
