Bangkok (VNA) – A Thai government delegation had a meeting with senior officials of the United Nations in New York on July 2, during which the Thai officials vowed to organise a referendum on the new draft con♒stitution on August 8.

According to the Thai Government Office, UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson headed the UN delegation, while Assistant Foreign Minister Weerasak Futrakul led the Thai team at the meeting that was also attended by the Thai PM’s special representative General Chatchalerm Chalermsuk, Foreign Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Apichart Chinwanno. The Thai officials explained the country’s situation on the threadhold of the referendum, as well as the political roadmap that the government gave, as well as their commitments to work closely with the UN to prevent misunderstandings. The new draft constitution, announced by the Thailand ’s Constritution Drafting Committee on March 29, comprises 105 pages with 279 articles. It is expected to be a solution to a decade-long political crisis in the Southeast Asian country.-VNA
