Thailand’s rice production plan announced

Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – The Thai Ministry of Agricultureand Cooperatives has announced a rice production plan for the 2018/2019production year.

Under the plan, morethan 33 million tonnes of rice will be produced from 70 million rice fieldsnationwide to keep up with demand. 

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and CooperativesLak Wachananawat said the first round of rice production in the 2018/2019production year includes 58 million Rai which are expected to yield more than25 million tonns of rice. Eight million tonnes will be produced from 12.2million Rai of rice fields in the second round. 

The global rice trade has a tendency to improve due tocontinuous demand from many countries particularly those in Africa and theMiddle East, said the deputy minister.
Furthermore, rice production inimportant rice importers such as Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines is notsufficient for domestic consumption. This is a good opportunity for Thailand toexport more rice, said the deputy minister-VNA
