Thua Thien-Hue to build 430 flood-proof houses in 2019-2020

A project to build more than 430 houses resilient to storms and floods for needy households in coastal areas of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue will be carried out from 2019 to 2020.

Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – 🎃A projectto build more than 430 houses resilient to storms and floods for needy householdsin coastal areas of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue will be carried outfrom 2019 to 2020.

Accordingly, 230 houses will be completedin 2019, with the rest in the following year, according Vice Chairman of the provincialPeople’s Committee Nguyen Van Phuong. In order to realise the project’s targets,communication work will be further enhanced in order to call for more socialresources and community support during the implementation. The province will encourage and prioritisefinancial assistance for the construction to begin soon, particularly for thosein areas at high risk of storms and floods. Provincial authorities will also workwith local governments to help disadvantaged households complete constructionbefore the rainy season commences. The project, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through the UnitedNations Development Programme, aims tohelp build safe and stable houses for local coastal residents who arevulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Under the project, beneficiaries willreceive an assistance of nearly 70 million VND (3,000 USD) each to build theirflood-proof houses, of which 1,700 USD is sourced from the GCF.

In 2018, 135 storm- and flood-proof houseswere built, fulfilling the year’s targets.

꧒ Thua Thien-Hue is among five coastal localities of Vietnam benefitting from theGCF project, together with Thanh Hoa, Quang Binh, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngaiprovinces. It aims to support the construction of 4,000 houses in theselocalities between 2017-2022 with non-refundable assistance totalling about29.5 million USD.

The project is also toraise local resilience to the unfortunate consequences of climate change viabuilding safer homes, increasing the coverage of mangrove forests, andproviding trustworthy information about climate risks.-VNA
