Top legislator attends talk on late President Ton Duc Thang

Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan onAugust 20 attended a talk about late President Ton Duc Thang on the occasion ofhis 130th birth anniversary.
Participants at the event recalled the life andrevolutionary career of the late President.
Born on August 20, 1888 at Ong Ho islet, An Hoa village, nowMy Hoa Hung commune of Long Xuyen city, An Giang province, Ton Duc Thang joinedthe patriotic movement against the French colonialists since young age. Duringthe time working abroad, he participated in workers’ movement in France, therising of the French Navy in the Black Sea in support of the October Revolutionin Russia.
Returning to Vietnam in 1920, the late President founded thefirst workers’ union in Vietnam and led the worker’ movement in Sai Gon, withthe Ba Son strike being the most typical example of the movement’s activities.He then joined the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth's Union and was entrusted withseveral key positions. He was arrested by the French colonialists in 1929 andwas imposed 20 years of hard labour in prision. In Con Dao prison, he was amongthe founders of the first Party cell in prison.
With the success of the August Revolution, Ton Duc Thangregained his freedom and immediately joined the resistance war against theFrench invaders. He was assigned many important missions by the Party, and inany position, Ton Duc Thang fulfilled his duty, setting a bright example of patriotism,firm revolutionary will, loyalty and revolutionary ethics.
His great contributions to the Vietnamese revolution, theworld peace movement and international friendship had won recognition in theform of many noble order and awards. He was the first person to be conferredwith the Sao Vang (Golden Star) Order by the Vietnamese Party and State. He wasalso awarded with the Lenin Order and the Lenin Prize of the Soviet Union.-VNA
President Ton Duc Thang was born on August 20, 1888 into a peasant family in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang. This year marks the 130th anniversary of his birthday.
A scientific workshop on President Ton Duc Thang held in the late leader’s home province of An Giang on August 19 drew the participation of many senior officials and researchers, including President Tran Dai Quang.
The 130th birthday anniversary of President Ton Duc Thang was marked at a grand ceremony held on August 20 in the late President’s home village in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
The festival highlighted the contributions and robust development of Vietnam's revolutionary press over the past century while promoting press products and showcasing the creativity of Vietnamese journalists.
