Trafficked women in Mekong delta receive help

Sixty-six women who were victims of sexual abuse in nine Mekong delta provinces have been assisted to reintegrate into the community under the second phase of the 2.2 billion VND project funded by the Anti-Trafficking Alliance (AAT).
Sixty-six women who were victims of sexual abuse in nine Mekong deltaprovinces have been assisted to reintegrate into the community under thesecond phase of the 2.2 billion VND project funded by theAnti-Trafficking Alliance (AAT).

Under the project, which wasjointly implemented by the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) Central Committeeand the Can Tho Women’s Association from June 2008 to May 2011, acentre to assist trafficked women was set up to provide services to helpthe victims in mental and physical rehabilitation, vocational trainingand job generation.

The project has extended assistance toalmost 70 victims who were trafficked abroad and provided 54 million VNDto help 39 out of 66 victims become established in animal breeding andconduct small businesses to stabilise their lives.

At a ceremonyheld in the Mekong delta city of Can Tho, to review the second phase ofthe project, VWU Vice President Tran Thanh Binh committed to continuecollaborating with Can Tho City and Mekong delta provinces to increasethe fight against this social evil and expand effective models to helpvictims.

Under the third phase of the project from June 1, 2011until May 31, 2014, the centre was expected to help another 60 victimsin the region./.
