Tsunami warning issued after 6.8 earthquake strikes off Indonesia

Jakarta (VNA) – A strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Sulawesiisland, Indonesia, on April 12, triggering a tsunami warning, the US GeologicalSurvey said.

The quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 17 km off the east coast ofSulawesi island.

According to the Indonesia’s geophysics agency, there were no immediate reportsof casualties or damage.

Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone nations in the world due to itsposition on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

Thesprawling archipelago is also lined with over 100 volcanoes.

Last September, a 7.5-magnitude quake and asubsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island killed more than 2,200 with athousand more declared missing.

On December 26, 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquakestruck Aceh province, causing a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 inIndonesia.–VNA
