Jakarta (VNA)- Two people died, three were injured and at least 41 people went missing aftera serious landslide struck a village in Sukabumi, West Java province ofIndonesia.
Spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo PurwoNugroho said the landslide took place on late December 31 in Sinaresmi villageas a result of prolonged heavy rains
“Search-and-rescueoperations are still being conducted for the missing victims,” he said, addingthat a total of 61 survivors have been taken to a temporary shelter.
As many as 34 houses in the village were buried in the landslide, according to BNPB’sreport.
Indonesia is often hit by natural disasters and downpours. In October lastyear, flash floods and landslides happened in many provinces on Sumatra island,claiming 20 lives. In June 2016, nearly 50 people were killed in a landslideand flood in Banjarnegara area in Central Java province.
Most recently, a volcano tsunami hit Sunda Strait on December 22, 2018, leaving over 420people dead, dozens missing and more than 7,000 others injured.-VNA
