Singaporean police have arrested one man and a woman for for terrorism-related activities, according to the Government of Singapore on September 7.

Hanoi (VNA) – Singaporeanpolice have arrested one man and a woman for for terrorism-related activities,according to the Government of Singapore on September 7.

The man arrested wasidentified as Imran Kassim, 34. The country’s Ministry of Home Affairs said hehad tried to make his way to Syria to join Islamic State fighters at leasttwice, and had prepared to attack members of the Singaporean armed forces.

More recently, he hadintended to join militants who seized control of Marawi city in southern Philippinesthis year. Imran’s arrest came after police received information from “peopleclose to him”.

The woman, 23, wasidentified as Shakirah Begam binte Abdul Wahab. She is the second Singaporeanwoman to be detained on suspicion of becoming radicalised. The ministry saidshe had been in contact with several foreign gunmen since 2013.

Singapore,regarded as the most stable country in Southeast Asia, has become increasinglyconcerned about the risks of radicalisation among its Muslim minority.

At least 14radicalised Singaporeans have been captured under a tough internal security lawsince 2015, up from 11 cases between 2007 and 2014, according to theSingaporean government.-VNA
