UNFPA helps Vietnam respond to gender-based, domestic violence

A project to support the prevention and response to gender violence, domestic violence and on addressing sex work-related issues was launched in Hanoi on December 15.

Hanoi (VNA) – A project to support the development andimplementation of evidence and human rights-based policies and programmes onprevention and response to gender violence, domestic violence and on addressingsex work-related issues was launched in Hanoi on December 15.

The project is jointly implemented by the Ministry ofLabour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), the Ministry of Culture, Sportsand Tourism and the Vietnam Farmers’ Union with technical assistance of the UNPopulation Fund (UNFPA) in Vietnam.

With a total budget of 4.1 million USD, of which 3.7 millionUSD is funded by the UNFPA, the scheme will be implemented during 2017-2021 to helpincrease the efficiency of the enforcement of the Law on Gender Equality, theLaw on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control and other policies andprogrammes on prevention and response to domestic violence.

It will also work to raise the capacity and responsibilityof relevant state agencies and organisations; and change the awareness and behaviourof policy-makers and the community, especially men, of prevention and responseto gender-related violence and domestic violence.

In addition, the project looks to support the developmentand implementation of evidence and human rights-based policies and programmeson addressing issues related to prostitution.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, MoLISA Deputy Minister DaoHong Lan said that thanks to joint efforts of the Government and people,Vietnam has seen positive achievements in ensuring gender equality.

However, there remain a lot of difficulties and challenges,requiring more effective solutions, Lan stated.

With the technical assistance from the UNFPA, she believedthat the project will help narrowing gender inequality and contribute to theimplementation of programmes and strategies on gender equality, gender-basedand domestic violence prevention and settlement of prostitution issues, as wellas sustainable development goals in Vietnam.-VNA
