Indonesian police said on September 23 that unrest in Wamena city, Papua province, has been put under control.

Hanoi (VNA) – Indonesian police said onSeptember 23 that unrest in Wamena city, Papua province, has been put undercontrol.

Spokesperson of the Indonesia National Police Maj. Gen. DediPrasetyo said the army and police have successfully handled the incident inWamena, adding that security forces have also taken steps to prevent the riotsfrom spreading.

Earlier the same day, unrest broke out in Indonesia'srestive Papua region as protesters burned down a government office and otherbuildings.

Houses and stores also went up in flames as hundreds took tothe streets, while another demonstration erupted in the provincial capitalJayapura, where security forces fired warning shots above protesters.

About 6,000 soldiers and police have been deployed to Papuaand west Papua provinces to stabilise the situation./.
