Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian experts havespoken highly of Vietnam’s role in the hosting of the upcoming DPRK-US HanoiSummit Vietnam on February 27-28.
In a recent interview granted to Vietnam NewsAgency’s correspondents in Jakarta, Beni Sukadis, Coordinator at IndonesianInstitute for Defense and Strategic Studies (LESPERSSI), said the summit is animportant step for the two countries to seek solutions to the denuclearisation onthe Korean Peninsula, thus bringing peace and stability in the region.
The selection of Hanoi as the venue for thesecond summit between Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the StateAffairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) KimJong-un and US President Donald Trump is a great opportunity for Vietnam,affirming the increasing role and position of the Southeast Asian country, hesaid.
Vietnam currently has an important position forthe US in the region, he said, adding that the bilateral economic cooperationis developing rapidly. Meanwhile, it also has traditional relations with theDPRK. Particularly, Vietnam plays a neutral role, keeping good relationshipwith both the DPRK and the US.
According to Beni, the Association of SoutheastAsian Nations (ASEAN) has always demonstrated its central role in addressingregional challenges and contributing to the development of the better relationsbetween the DPRK and the US.
Vietnam is contributing its efforts to thecommon work of the bloc, he said, adding that as the Chair of ASEAN in 2020,Vietnam will play an important role in resolving regional challenges, includingnuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula.
