US, Singapore hold annual naval exercise

Singapore and the United States are conducting their 19th annual naval exercise named ‘Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training’ (CARAT), the Singaporean Defence Ministry said on July 15.
Singapore and the United States are conducting their 19thannual naval exercise named ‘Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training’(CARAT), the Singaporean Defence Ministry said on July 15.

Accordingto the ministry, this year’s exercise, which runs from July 15-26,focuses on sharpening combat capacity in conventional maritime wars suchas anti-air, anti- surface and anti-submarine capabilities, as wellas deploying joint campaigns between the naval and air forces.

Five ships, a submarine, a naval helicopter and seven aircraft,including the newly commissioned RSN Archer-class submarine RSS Archer,from the Singaporean side participate in the exercise.

Meanwhile, the US side joins with three ships, including the newlydeployed USN Littoral Combat Ship USS Freedom, a submarine, a navalhelicopter and an aircraft.

Each side sends 1,400 personnel to the event.

Started in 1995, CARAT is held annually to enhance interoperabilityand professional cooperation between the participating forces ofSingapore and the US.-VNA
