Vanuatu treasures traditional ties with Vietnam

Sydney (VNA) – Vanuatu attaches importance to the traditionalfriendship with Vietnam, President Tallis Obed Moses affirmed while hosting arecent reception for Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia and Vanuatu Ngo HuongNam, who came to present credentials to the Vanuatu leader.

The two countries share various similarities, especially their arduous fightsto gain independence, the President said, expressing his admiration for the heroicVietnamese people and the country’s economic achievement in the past years.

The Vietnamese diplomat affirmed his resolve to work to promote bilateralrelations.

Ambassador Nam also had meetings with high-level officials of Vanuatu,including Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, Minister of Foreign Affairs RalphRegenvanu, and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisheries andBiosecurity. Vanuatu officials all said they want to learn from Vietnam’s experiencein economic development and integration.

Both sides should bolster cooperation in the fields of their potential likeagriculture and aquatic cultivation and exploitation, they said, adding thatmeasures should be designed to promote two-way trade, investment and tourism.

In a bid to facilitate collaboration in the coming time, both sides agreed toaccelerate the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in thefisheries sector.

On the occasion, Vanuatu officials announced a plan to set up a GeneralConsulate in Vietnam and appoint a Vanuatuan of Vietnamese origin to the postof General Consul.

Also, Ambassador Nam met with the Vietnamese community in the country andattended a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Vietnamesefraternity association’s house, during which he laid stressed on thesignificance of solidarity to promote Vietnamese identity.

Currently, there are some 300 Vietnamese nationals living and working inVanuatu. They have gained foothold and made considerable contributions to thehost nation. Many of them are successful with their business and create jobsfor hundreds of local workers.

With support from the Vietnamese Embassy, the Vietnamese fraternity associationhas affirmed its role in building a strong and solid community.-VNA
