Vietnam achieves targets during UNSC presidency month: Ambassador

Vietnam has completed what it planned to do during the month it held the presidency of the UN Security Council, said Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN.

New York (VNA) – Vietnam has completed what itplanned to do during the month it held the presidency of the UN SecurityCouncil, said Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission tothe UN.

Ambassador Quy made the affirmation in an interview grantedto the Vietnam News Agency on January 31 when Vietnam ended its term as rotarypresident of the UNSC at the beginning of its tenure as a non-permanent memberof the UNSC,

He said Vietnam took the occasion of its presidency topropose the theme on the 75th anniversary of the UN Charter, thus raisingthe awareness of the entire UN system and member states about the Charter’simportance to global peace and security.

As ASEAN Chair in 2020 and UNSC President for January 2020, thecountry has also been able to highlight the importance of cooperation betweenthe UN and regional and sub-regional organisations, in which ASEAN was made anexemplary model, he said.

According to Quy, during January many issues arose and the UNSCmade rapid response and timely decisions to address them.

He said Vietnam began its presidency month with an opendebate with the participation of 109 countries, the largest number so far, and111 speakers, and concluded the month with the event on ASEAN – UN cooperation.Quy described the event as an open ending with a message that Vietnam wantscloser coordination within the UN, and between the UN and regionalorganisations to enhance the role of the UN Charter, the rule of law and the protectionof global peace and security.

The ambassador also stressed that the UNSC had adopted manydecisions during the month, including five resolutions, a presidentialstatement and seven press statements, which made January one of the months withthe largest number of decisions made so far.

Asked about difficulties that the country faced during itspresidency month, the diplomat shared that the important thing is to find the commoninterests between countries to deal with urgent issues.

Regarding Vietnam’s priorities in the remaining time of itsnon-permanent membership of the UNSC, Ambassador Quy said Vietnam must makefurther contributions to the UNSC and make preparations for April 2021 whenVietnam will again assume the role of UNSC President./.
