Vietnam, Australia eye bilateral relationship

The two countries should also need toincrease exchanges of delegations at all levels, said Vietnamese DeputyPrime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Australian Prime Minister JuliaGillard at their meeting in Canberra on April 10.

They expressed satisfaction of seeing significant wide-ranging developments in the two countries’ ties in recent time.

DeputyPM Phuc welcomed Australia’s consideration of Vietnam as one of itsprioritised nations in Asia while PM Gillard described the Vietnameseguest’s visit as an important event in bilateral relationship.

Duringthe meeting, the two sides discussed regional and international issuesof common concern, sharing the same view on the need to maintainingpeace, stability and cooperation in the East Sea.

The EastSea issue needs to be solved on the basis of respecting internationallaws, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, theysaid.

They affirmed to continue cooperating and closely workingat regional and international fora, and supporting each other’s bids torun for UN agencies.

Also the same day, Deputy PM Phuc hadmeetings with Australian health and legal experts to share experience infighting HIV/AIDS and other social issues.

Earlier, the DeputyPM had working sessions with Commander of the Australian Federal PoliceToni Negus, Minister of Trade and Competitiveness and acting ForeignMinister Craig Emerson, and Health Minister Tania Plibersek.

He witnessed the signing of an extradition agreement between the twocountries and a memorandum of understanding on cooperation betweenVietnam ’s Ministry of Justice and Australia’s Attorney General.

DeputyPM Phuc is on an official visit to Australia from April 9-14 at theinvitation of Deputy PM and Treasurer Wayne Swan./.
