Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam and Bhutan share many similarities in culture, history and religion, which is a solid foundation for bilateral relations to develop, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has said.

She made the remark on September 7 while meeting with Speaker of Bhutan’s National Assembly Lyonpo Jigme Zangpo, who is in Hanoi to attend the HelpAge Asia/Pacific regional conference on the economic implications of ageing.

Ngan congratulated Bhutan on development successes, highlighting that it has become the world’s happiest nation which makes the gross national happiness index the measurement of prosperity.

On this occasion, the Chairwoman proposed the two countries increase delegation exchanges at all levels, including between their parliaments and parliamentary agencies.

She affirmed that Vietnam is ready to share experience with Bhutan in economic development, particularly agriculture, rural development, poverty alleviation, education, and social welfare. It is also willing to share negotiation experience and supports Bhutan to soon become a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Ngan added that the two sides should continue supporting each other at international forums and organisations of which both countries are members.

For his part, the Bhutanese parliament speaker said the Asia-Pacific regional conference in Hanoi is a good opportunity for countries to learn from experience of one another and international experts so as to address existing population ageing problems.

He presented his country’s socio-economic situation while expressing his good impression of Vietnam, especially its efforts to rise over poverty. He spoke highly of Vietnam’s socio-economic development as well as its role in the international arena.

He voiced the hope that the two countries will continue close coordination at international forums and organisations, and further cooperation to develop the domestic economies, preserve traditional culture and protect the environment.

꧒ Experience sharing should also be stepped up between their legislative bodies so as to help with bilateral ties’ expansion, he added.-VNA
