Vietnam calls for funding boost for Palestine refugees
Vietnam called on countries and donors to maintain and increase their financial support to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), at a meeting of the UN Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Fourth Committee) in New York on November 7.

New York (VNA) – Vietnam called oncountries and donors to maintain and increase their financial support to the UNRelief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), at ameeting of the UN Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (FourthCommittee) in New York on November 7.
Counsellor Do Ngoc Thuy, a representative of theVietnamese permanent mission to the UN, stressed the need to ensure funding forPalestine refugees and to contribute to stabilising the situation in the area.
However, the support shouldnot be considered a replacement of a long-term solution to theIsrael-Palestine conflict, he stressed.
The most important is to guarantee legitimate rightsand interests of the Palestinians by establishing a Palestinian State with EastJerusalem as the capital city, and to live in peace next to the State ofIsrael, with border lines recognised internationally on the basis of thepre-1967 borders and relevant resolutions of the UN.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the UNRWA, saidthat for far too long, the agency has been expected to manage chronicunderfunding while at the same time delivering on its mandate.
Emphasising that the UNRWA, which relies on voluntary contributions,is short by about 100 million USD every year, he appealed for more funds sothat it can implement its digital strategy, deliver on environmentalsustainability commitments, and replace obsolete basic assets while alsopromoting the rights and well-being of Palestine refugees.
The Fourth Committee considers a broad range ofissues covering a cluster of five decolonisation-related agenda items, theeffects of atomic radiation, questions relating to information, a comprehensivereview of the question of peacekeeping operations as well as a review of specialpolitical missions, the UNRWA, Israeli Practices and settlement activitiesaffecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs of the occupiedterritories, and international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space./.
Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, expressed his concern about continued violence in the Occupied Palestine Territory, particularly in the West Bank, two months after the ceasefire was announced, while addressing the UN Security Council’s open debate on the Middle East on July 28.
Le Hoai Trung, head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations, has suggested Vietnam and Palestine take measures to enhance solidarity, friendship and cooperation between their Parties, States and peoples in the time ahead.
