Vietnam calls for UNICEF to support policy development

Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan asked the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for further assistance in perfecting Vietnam’s legal framework on the protection of children, and in enhancing parliament’s supervision of the implementation of children’s rights.

During a meeting with UNICEF-VietnamRepresentative Youssouf Adbel-Jelil in Hanoi on September 5, Nganpraised the effective cooperation between the NA and the organisation,which has helped improve child protection and the implementation ofchildren’s rights.

She thanked UNICEF for its support andhighlighted the NA’s commitment to including child-related issues in itslaw-making process.

The official expressed her hope that UNICEFcontinue addressing issues of the child in its programmes in Vietnam,including infant mortality, malnutrition, access to clean water,HIV/AIDS and education.

For his part, Youssouf Adbel-Jelilcongratulated Vietnam on its accomplishments in protecting andcaring for children, as well as its progress towards achieving theMillennium Development Goals.

He said UNICEF will continue tohelp Vietnam develop and implement child-related policies, carry outjoint projects, and boost cooperation between the two sides.-VNA
