Vietnam Coast Guard – core force in national security protection

Hanoi (VNA) – National AssemblyChairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has described the Vietnam Coast Guard as thecore force in protecting national security, and maritime order and safety.
Addressing a ceremony to mark 20 years of thetraditional day of the Vietnam Coast Guard in Hanoi on August 28, the toplegislator stressed the important role of Vietnam’s seas and islands innational construction and defence.
The Party and State consistently pursue the policyof protecting and developing the sea-based economy, she said.
Citing the Maritime Strategy until 2020 and theMaritime Law, Ngan added that the National Assembly is expected to adopt a Lawon Vietnam Coast Guard during its upcoming sixth session.
To better fulfill its role, the Vietnam Coast Guardshould carry forward achievements and overcome shortcomings, while seriouslyimplementing the Party’s guidelines and policies on military and nationaldefence, she said.
The NA Chairwoman urged the force to work harder inorder to improve combat capacity of all-level Party committees andorganisations, and raise the quality of personnel training.
Apart from the communication work, the force needsto pay attention to international cooperation and joining hands with lawenforcement forces and competent agencies of foreign countries to addresssea-related issues, she said.
Over the past time, the Vietnam Coast Guard has preventedthousands of foreign vessels from violating Vietnam’s waters, detected hundredsof trade fraud cases, and busted many major drug rings. Besides, the force hasprovided support for fishermen who were in distress at sea.
The Vietnam Coast Guard has set up bilateral andmultilateral ties, and hotlines with law enforcement forces of 20 countries inthe region and the world at large, helping create an image of Vietnam as a responsiblenation in preserving maritime security, order and safety, and coping withnon-traditional security challenges.

The High Command of the Vietnam Coast Guard was bestowed the title “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces in the Reform Period” at a ceremony marking its 17th founding anniversary in Hanoi on August 28.
Vietnam and China held the ninth round of negotiations of a working group on the sea area beyond the mouth of the Gulf of Tonkin and the sixth round of negotiations of a working group on cooperation in sea development in the central city Da Nang, on March 15-16.
President Tran Dai Quang on August 15 requested the Vietnam Coast Guard to continue coordinating with authorities of island communes and districts to provide more effective and practical assistance for fishermen.
