Hanoi (VNA) - Businesses in Vietnam were the worstaffected with 17.1 million incidents, according to data from globalcybersecurity company Kaspersky.
It was followed by Indonesia with 14.6 million and Thailand with4.7 million.
Southeast Asia saw nearly 43 million local threats targetingbusinesses in 2023. Singapore recorded a 67% increase in local incidents, from300,000 in 2022 to 500,000, the lowest in the region.
Statistics on local infections of user computers are an importantindicator of the overall cyberthreat landscape, and include objects thatpenetrated the target computer through infecting files or removable media, orinitially made their way onto the computer in non-open form (for example,programmes in complex installers or encrypted files).
These statistics are produced by Kaspersky’s scans of files on thehard drive at the moment they were created or accessed and of removable storagemedia.
Adrian Hia, managing director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, said:“Southeast Asia shows solid potential to become a major manufacturing hub globally.The region is also consistent in charting steady digital economic growththrough the years.
“To be able to continue these feats, organisations, whetheroperating on IT or OT [operational technology] systems, should build theircyberdefences against sophisticated attacks that use the same old techniquesand tactics.”
Protection against local attacks not only requires a securitysolution capable of treating infected objects but also a firewall, anti-rootkitfunctionality and control over removable devices, the company said, adding thatby scanning systems with robust security solutions, organisations could preventthe spread of malware through files or removable media./.
As many as 1,812 cyber attacks were detected in Vietnam so far this year, a drop of 38% compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).
The Authority of Information Safety (AIS) under the Ministry of Information and Communications has asked information security units of agencies, organisations and businesses to roll out drastic measures to ensure safety for information systems under their management, with priorities on monitoring and early warnings.
