Vietnam helps Laos build topographic database

Vietnam has helped Laos complete the building of a digital topographic database and a topographic map of its northern and central region, serving the country’s socio-economic development and environmental management.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam has helped Laos complete the building of a digital topographicdatabase and a topographic map of its northern and central region, serving thecountry’s socio-economic development and environmental management.

Theinformation was announced at a conference, co-organised by the VietnameseMinistry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) and the Lao Ministry ofHome Affairs in Hanoi on November 16 to review the project on the work.

The projectwas part of an agreement on cooperation in economy, culture, education, andscience-technology signed by the Vietnamese and Lao governments in 2012.

Costingnearly 184 billion VND (7.9 million USD) funded by the Vietnamese Government,the project was implemented from 2014 to 2017. The database and the map havinga scale of 1:50,000 feature a total area of more than 170,000 km2 of thecentral and northern regions of Laos.

Phan DucHieu, Director of the MoNRE’s Department of Survey, Mapping and GeographicInformation, said the project completed all sections on schedule.

He said hisdepartment has handed over to the Lao National Geographic Department allassociated equipment, software, and a guidebook for the management andexploitation of the database.

Thong ChanhManixay, Deputy Minister of the Lao Ministry of Home Affairs said the successof the project reflects the friendship between Vietnam and Laos as well as thegood coordination between the MoNRE and his ministry.

He said it helped Laos build its own topographic database and train highlycompetent personnel in charge of running the database in the coming time.

On theoccasion, the Lao ministry presented a third-class Issara Order to MoNRE DeputyMinister Nguyen Thi Phuong Hoa. It also awarded the first, second and thirdclass Labour Orders to nine groups as well as other orders, medals, andcertificates of merit to more than 50 individuals to honour their contributionsto the success of the project.-VNA
