Hanoi (VNA) – AmbassadorDang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, has emphasised theneed to find a long-term political solution for Syria despite the longest periodof calm since the beginning of the conflict in 2011.

He made the statement at aUnited Nations Security Council’s meeting on Syria on December 20 with the attendance of Geir O. Pedersen, Special Envoy of the Secretary‑General forSyria and Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairsand Emergency Relief Coordinator.

The Vietnamese diplomat calledon Syrian parties to engage in constructive negotiations and underlined theimportance of international community support for the process. He called forincreased humanitarian assistance and highlighted the need for developing comprehensive post-conflict recovery support to ensure the self-reliance of theSyrian people.

At the meeting, Pedersen saidthat efforts are being made to promote the participation of internationalpartners and regional countries in seeking appropriate solutions to the deadlocksituation in the political process in Syria on the basis of the UNSC’s Resolution2254.

UNUnder-Secretary Martin Griffiths said that the humanitariansituation in Syria is deteriorating due to the impact of instability, economiccrisis and complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also briefed onthe implementation of Resolution 2585 regarding the deployment of cross-linedeliveries of aid to the Northwest region and the support for post-conflictrecovery in Syria.

🎀 The same day, Ambassador Quy welcomed the announcement on the withdrawal from the Amhara and Afar areas of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) as the UNSC held a consultation on the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia.

He expressed concern about thedeteriorating security situation in Tigray, Amhara, Afar and some other partsof Ethiopia, as well as the increase in attacks against civilians, especiallywomen and children and humanitarian activities. The Ambassador emphasised theimportant role of UN agencies, including the UN Children's Fund(UNICEF), the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and otherinternational partners, in supporting humanitarian activities in the country. Healso underlined the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs ofcountries and settlement of disputes by peaceful means, calling on theinternational community, especially the African Union, to help the partiespromote dialogue, build trust and provide humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia./.
