Vietnam highlights significance of end of World War II
The historical lessons of World War II as well as of Vietnam demonstrate that no force can suppress the enduring aspiration for peace, the universal values of independence, freedom, and the right of nations to self-determination.

New York (VNA) - Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, has emphasised the profound and long-lasting significance of the end of the Second World War for the international community and for Vietnam.
Addressing a meeting that marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the war held by the UN General Assembly in New York on May 7, Giang expressed deep gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives and paid tribute to all the victims of the war.
At that time in history, the Vietnamese people launched their August Revolution, bringing an end to nearly a century of colonial and fascist rule, and marking a historic turning point as Vietnam emerged as an independent and democratic nation.
The diplomat affirmed that the historical lessons of World War II as well as of Vietnam demonstrate that no force can suppress the enduring aspiration for peace, the universal values of independence, freedom, and the right of nations to self-determination.
On this occasion, Vietnam calls on all countries to strengthen multilateral cooperation, foster international solidarity, promote mutual trust, and uphold international law, especially the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, such as respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, the non-use of force, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
These principles have played a vital role in preventing a global war since 1945 and formming the foundation of the United Nations, Giang said.
Vietnam, as an active and responsible member of the United Nations, has always been fully committed to contributing to peacekeeping efforts, promoting cooperation and development, for a brighter future for generations to come, affirmed the ambassador./.
Vietnam always remembers the great support of the State and people of the former Soviet Union and Russia today during the resistance wars as well as the present cause of national construction and defence.
In his address at the national ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification on April 30, 2025, Party General Secretary To Lam declared: The victory of the resistance war against the US for national salvation stemmed from the correct and creative leadership of the Party; from the people’s war policy, carried out through the strength of great national unity and international solidarity; from the combination of military, political and, diplomatic struggles and the art of seizing the right moment to concentrate forces for a general offensive and uprising; from the strength of the great rear base in the North supporting the major frontlines in the South; from the great, righteous, sincere and effective support and assistance of the Soviet Union, China and fraternal socialist countries; from the Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia special solidarity; from peace-loving, progressive people and forces worldwide, including the progressive Americans.
The findings published on The Hill website showed that 44% of adults view the war unjustified, while 50% admitted they still had not clear idea what the US was even fighting for in Vietnam.
