Vietnam hopes to receive help from Global Environment Fund

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam wants the Global Environment Fund (GEF) to continuehelping Vietnam in well addressing environment-related issues, Prime MinisterNguyen Xuan Phuc said during his reception for GEF CEO and ChairpersonNaoko Ishii in Hanoi on May 30.

He thanked the GEF Secretariat for selectingVietnam as the host of the GEF’s sixth Assembly, which, he said, showed thefund’s appreciation of Vietnam and the country’s role, contributions andcommitments to joining hands with the international community to solve globalenvironment issues.

Vietnam attaches importance to environmentissues in national development, the PM affirmed, adding the country hopes tointensify cooperation with GEF.

Regarding the organisation of GEF Assemblyand related events, the government leader told the guest that he had assignedthe Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to coordinate with GEF inpreparation work.

He also expressed his hope that GEFmaintains its assistance for Vietnam, especially in realisingenvironment-related targets and Sustainable Development Goals, buildingsustainable financial policies and mechanisms to preserve biodiversity throughthe involvement of the community and the private sector, and transferringtechnology related to sustainable energy, and implementing measures to dealwith climate change.

Vietnam also wishes to receive GEF’s helpin implementing forest ecosystem and production services, ensuring foodsecurity at the local level in the context of implementing the United NationsConvention to Combat Desertification, and boosting green economy opportunities.

The Government leader said he hopes GEFwill implement projects to help Vietnam tackle ocean waste and address climatechange and sea level rise challenges in the Mekong Delta.

Nakao Ishii said that GEF needs cooperationfrom foreign governments and businesses around the world in addressing globalenvironmental issues.

She appreciated that Vietnam is seeingpositive changes in tackling environmental issues, but still facing a number ofchallenges.

GEF commits to supporting Vietnam inaddressing these challenges, she stated, stressing the important role of theVietnamese Government, Prime Minister and Ministry of Natural Resources andEnvironment in the work.-VNA
