Vietnam, Laos reinforce ties in science, technology

Vietnam and Laos have agreed to enhance their cooperation in science and technology in the future.

The agreement was reached during talks in Vientiane on December 20between head of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology ChauVan Minh and Lao Minister of Science and Technology BoviengkhamVongdala, who is also the President of the Lao National Academy ofSocial Science.

The two sides looked at science andtechnology cooperation between their countries in the last couple ofyears and discussed orientations for working together in the time tocome.

They agreed to jointly undertake scientificresearch studies in urgent fields to support the planning ofsocio-economic development policies and ensuring security and defence ineach country.

They were unanimous in sooncompleting a draft of a project to strengthen the Lao academy’s capacityin conducting scientific research for the 2014 – 2016 period andbuilding key scientific programmes within a comprehensive cooperationagreement between Vietnam and Laos .

To enhancethe cooperation between the two academies and consolidate bothcountries’ special relations, the Vietnamese side has been working withLaos’ related agencies in scientific projects and training humanresources.-VNa

The PM revealed Vietnam’s plan to develop nuclear power in the near future, and called on the Swedish side to assist Vietnam in developing and refining legal and policy frameworks for the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; training and developing human resources; ensuring nuclear safety; and conducting training and drills to improve incident management capabilities.
